MTE Instruments is a technology company based in Rimouski that manufactures, among other products, the OpTS, a system for continuously measuring torque, RPM, and power on a ship’s propeller shaft.
This system, available as part of the Opdaq series, enables monitoring of ship performance, including fuel consumption.
In order to bring this product to market, the company was required to have it certified by a third party. A classification, certification, and insurability assessment organization for ships therefore provided MTE Instruments with a list of tests to be conducted, based largely on military standards. In North America, these tests are generally conducted in the United States, which entails significant costs.
Having previously worked with the Novika team, MTE Instruments turned to us to conduct the requested tests, which spanned several areas of physical measurement: electromagnetic compatibility, electrical safety, power supply characterization, climate chamber testing (humidity and temperature), and shock and vibration testing.
Based on the results of these tests, the Rimouski-based manufacturer made the necessary adjustments to its product to ensure it maintains the qualities for which it is renowned: compliance with regulatory requirements and superior operational reliability. The OpTS is now installed on several ships, contributing to their smooth operation and optimizing their fuel consumption.
