SBI is a Canadian family-owned company that designs, manufactures, and markets residential heating products sold worldwide. They specialize in the design, manufacture, and marketing of solid-fuel heating appliances and their venting systems.
For more than 10 years now, SBI and Novika have been working together on the technological advancement of wood-burning heating appliances. This collaboration facilitates the exchange of methods and knowledge between the CCTT and SBI to achieve research objectives that enable customers to stay ahead of evolving regulations. ADRIQ also awarded them its “Coup de Coeur” prize in the “Collaboration with a CCTT” category at its 2022 gala.
Ever since the discovery of fire, humans have used wood combustion for heat and food. Until very recently, air pollution was given very little consideration compared to the need for heat. In 2015, faced with the announced tightening of particulate matter emission standards, the company Stove Builder International (SBI) had to take action. Having already met and exceeded existing standards, SBI is always on the lookout for new technologies to provide combustion appliances with the lowest levels of particulate matter emissions.
The particulate emissions sensor developed as part of this project makes it possible to target the combustion phases that pose the greatest challenges in terms of particulate emissions. It also helps identify when the fireplace is lit and the actions taken by fireplace users—including opening the door—that lower temperatures inside the fireplace and thus cause momentary emissions.
This particulate emissions sensor:
• Is patent-pending;
• Is used by SBI for its internal testing;
• Is integrated into the control systems of appliances currently under development;
• Has been deployed at customer sites for real-world testing (2023–2024);
• Is affordable for integration into customers’ appliances.
