Cocall Inc. is a Gaspé-based company that designs and markets electronic hunting calls. These devices are used to attract a wide variety of animals, including moose, white-tailed deer, sand grouse, wild turkeys, and more. The first calls were designed in 2010 by the company’s two founders, Michel Langlois and Patrice Méthot, both avid hunters.
Driven by a desire to offer its customers the best possible experience, the company wanted to develop a next-generation bird call that could be controlled remotely via Wi-Fi and Bluetooth using a smartphone app.
The founders had already begun work on an initial prototype. However, transforming this prototype into a market-ready product required a redesign of the electronics, the embedded and mobile software, and the device’s mechanical housing.
Following an introduction by Espace PME Innovation Gaspésie, the project was entrusted to Novika, which leveraged its team’s diverse expertise—in electronics, embedded software, wireless communications, mechanics, and electromagnetic compatibility—all coordinated under a single project management framework.
The Novika team made the necessary design adjustments to the electronics, embedded software, mechanical enclosure, and software application. The optimized electronic bird call can be controlled remotely via a mobile app. The digital platform and software application were designed with future upgrades in mind, featuring flexibility that simplifies the introduction of new features. Electromagnetic compatibility (EMC) pre-compliance testing was also conducted in Novika’s laboratories to validate the design against Canadian and U.S. requirements.
